Title: The Maze

Majora's Mask - March 27, 2007 10:04 AM (GMT)
It's huge. It's absolutely, completely, massively and uncomprehendingly huge. Some of the walls are privet hedge, some are brick wall, some are dead bushes and all are tall and commanding. There are thousands of dead ends, but just as many paths that seem to lead to nowhere. Not even necessarily in circles.

Majora's Mask - March 27, 2007 10:04 AM (GMT)
::Petunius appears in a random location.::

Petunius - March 27, 2007 10:09 AM (GMT)
::Petunius blinks a couple of times and then frowns as he tries to get his bearings. Everywhere he turns, there's a wall of gargantuan proportions.::

(Where the hell am I?)

::He tentatively takes a few steps forward onto one of the paths and begins walking slowly.::

Majora's Mask - March 27, 2007 10:17 AM (GMT)
::After a while, it feels like hours have passed. Maybe they have. And still no exit in sight. Is he even facing the same way he started? What way is that way?::

Petunius - March 27, 2007 10:37 AM (GMT)
::Petunius stops, feeling like he's walked a thousand miles and still not achieved anything.::

(Wait, didn't I pass that pathway already?)

::He narrows his eyes and glances at the other paths. They all look exactly the same.::

(This is ridiculous.)

::He takes off again in another random direction, leaving it all to chance. It's not like he actually knows where he's going anyway.::

Centaur - March 27, 2007 11:43 AM (GMT)
::There's the sound of hoofbeats nearby, but good luck getting to this magical creature.::

Petunius - March 27, 2007 12:22 PM (GMT)
::Petunius stops and cranes his head slightly at the sound. Someone on a horse, perhaps? Random, yes but not at all unexpected, what with everything else going on. He starts off in the direction he thinks the sound's coming from but soon finds himself at a dead end. Hmm. Maybe he can take the long way around. He turns around and goes off in another direction. Another path to nowhere. After a while of this, he sighs wearily and stops before deciding to call out.::

"Hello? Is somebody there?"

Centaur - March 27, 2007 05:51 PM (GMT)
"Yes."

::Replies a deep, rough voice. The centaur has stopped walking and looks upwards in the direction Petunius' call came from.::

"There is no point in trying to meet. We will never find one another."

::He lets out a world-weary sigh, obviously very resigned about being lost here.::

Petunius - March 27, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
(Mr. Optimistic right here.)

"Um...who are you? And how did you wind up getting in here?"

Centaur - March 28, 2007 01:18 AM (GMT)
"I don't know. It's been so long."

::The hoofbeats start up again as the centaur slowly walks closer to the wall on the other side of where Petunius is. There's no way they'd ever get through, though.::

Petunius - March 28, 2007 10:39 AM (GMT)
"Okay, look. We obviously got in here somehow so that means there has to be a way out, right?"

::Petunius also makes his way towards the wall he heard the centaur's voice coming from and begins to examine it with his hands.::

"Do you happen to have some kind of cutting implement with you by any chance? A sword maybe? Or an axe? I'm thinking we can hack through the bushes and leaves at least so we can make this a little bit easier."

Centaur - March 28, 2007 11:40 AM (GMT)
('Cutting implement'?)

"I have tried."

::There is a sound, a sword being unsheathed. But then it's replaced.::

"It is ineffectual."

Petunius - March 28, 2007 12:49 PM (GMT)
::Petunius sighs at this. Was this his test? A test of patience, maybe? Or was he supposed to stop whoever was on the other side of the wall from being so defeatist and actually do something?::

(This is ridiculous.)

"We have to get out of this place. Wherever it is. I need you to try and remember. Was there anyone else in here before me?"

Centaur - March 28, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
"No. But I have been here so long."

::The centaur starts walking slowly, hoofbeats clopping the ground.::

"It is impossible to leave."

Petunius - March 28, 2007 01:37 PM (GMT)
"No it isn't."

::Petunius' voice comes out a bit more forceful than he'd intended.::

"You don't understand, I have to leave this place. We both do. The world's about to end and I have to go help my friends with stopping it."

Centaur - March 28, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
"You will not get out."

::The centaur's voice is sorrowful and he starts walking properly now.::

Petunius - March 28, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
"Why? Why won't I get out? Why is it impossible to leave? Is it because you've just given up? Is that what I'm supposed to do as well?"

::As he says this, Petunius is already searching the immediate area for a pathway that looks like it may actually lead somewhere.::

Centaur - March 29, 2007 12:12 AM (GMT)
"Give up, yes. Give up and you will never leave."

Petunius - March 29, 2007 07:24 PM (GMT)
"Well I have no intention of doing that. I'm gonna find a way out, somehow."

::Petunius moves away from the wall and begins to walk down another path.::

Centaur - March 30, 2007 10:07 PM (GMT)
::The centaur follows Petunius on the other side of the hedge, his hooves clopping slowly.::

"It's no use. There's no way out. In all the time I have been here..."

::He sighs a long, mournful sigh.::

"There's no way out."

Majora's Mask - March 30, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
::More time passes. There's nothing. No way out down this path, or that one or any of them.::

Centaur - March 30, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
::The hoofbeats stop.::

"And this, my friend, is where our paths divide."

::He's evidently come to a wall; he'll have to turn back or turn away.::

Petunius - April 1, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
::Petunius stops as well and frowns before turning towards the source of the creature's voice again.::

"Wait! Where're you gonna go?"

(If we're both lost, then is he just going to randomly wander off by himself?)

Centaur - April 1, 2007 08:36 PM (GMT)
"It does not matter. For I will never leave."

Petunius - April 1, 2007 08:47 PM (GMT)
"Yeah, you keep saying that."

::Petunius sighs and looks around, while wracking his brain on how all of this could possibly have anything to do with a test of some kind. Is he meant to stay here too? But then how is that meant to prove that he's worthy of helping the others save the world? Last time, he abandoned everyone when things went to hell.::

(But that doesn't make any sense either...)

::He thinks back to when he came back to town and how lost he'd felt; much like now.::

(There's no one else around to ask for guidance...)

::So he just remains where he is for the moment, desperately trying to think of what the Book said and any relevance to this particular scenario.::

Majora's Mask - April 1, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
"Giving in so soon?"

Petunius - April 1, 2007 09:20 PM (GMT)
"I'm not giving in. Just biding my time."

::Petunius looks upwards, despite not knowing where the voice was coming from.::

Majora's Mask - April 1, 2007 09:22 PM (GMT)
::Majora laughs long and low before the sound of his voice fades.::

Petunius - April 2, 2007 05:52 AM (GMT)
::Petunius sighs and turns back to where he thinks the centaur is and leans closer to the wall.::

"Just humour me, okay? I get that you think you'll never leave. So why continue walking around the maze? If all you're doing--if all we're doing is going round in circles, then what's the point?"

Centaur - April 2, 2007 09:44 AM (GMT)
::There's a long pause, then the clip-clopping hoofbeats get louder as the centaur returns to respond.::

"And why not? Should I just stand in the one place for eternity? It makes no difference. If I do not walk, my legs will pain me. If I stand, tedium shall encapsulate me further."

Majora's Mask - April 2, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
"What is the point?"

Petunius - April 2, 2007 10:13 PM (GMT)
"The point is that I do everything in my power to get out of this maze..."

::Petunius suddenly stops. What is the point? It's like trying to swim against the tide. Clearly all this walking and searching was getting him nowhere and neither was the centaur.::

(Maybe because sometimes in life we find ourselves in situations completely out of our control and no matter how much we try to fight the circumstances, some things need to happen a certain way before we can move on. And forcing the issue is only gonna prolong the experience unecessarily. Or maybe there just is no point.)

::He takes a moment to mull this over. Maybe he's just meant to leave his fate in whatever was out there. Or...maybe he should stop trying so hard to find the way out. He wasn't going to give up...just simply be. Sooner or later someone else had to turn up, if he and the centaur managed to find their way in here.::

"Or maybe the point isn't clear yet. Maybe I'm not supposed to find it by walking through this maze or doing some test to determine if I'm worthy."

Majora's Mask - April 2, 2007 10:14 PM (GMT)
"No... keep looking..."

Petunius - April 2, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
"Keep looking for what? All I can see is walls. Massive walls and dead ends that lead to nowhere."

Majora's Mask - April 2, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
"You can find a way out if you try."

Petunius - April 2, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
::Petunius frowns and looks over at the variety of walls again. Obviously there was no way he could get through the brick walls. The privet hedges...maybe. Perhaps the dead bushes were the way to go. He sighs and walks over to one particularly thick wall of dead bushes and proceeds to try and pull out as much of the dead branches and leaves and such in order to maybe get through.::

Majora's Mask - April 2, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
::No result from that.::

Petunius - April 2, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
::Petunius sighs at this with frustration. Time for a new game plan. If he can't go through the walls and he certainly can't get over them, then the only way left is to actually go through the maze, but with some kind of methodical approach, as opposed to randomly wandering around until he died of either exhaustion, dehydration or sheer loss of will to live.::

(It'd help if I had a ball of string or something to mark my trail...)

::So instead he places his left hand against the wall on the left and proceeds onto the lengthy walk onwards, using the sensation as a way of guiding him; without taking his hand off the wall in the process. The idea was that he could attempt to at the very least get a sense of his bearings by periodically looking upwards at the sky. Maybe a certain cloud formation could indicate the places he had been to before or something along those lines.::

Majora's Mask - April 3, 2007 08:07 AM (GMT)
::Even if he could walk the entire maze, it happens to cover the 'planet' he's on: Maze Planet! So there is no end. Not that Petunius knows that.::

Centaur - April 4, 2007 11:23 PM (GMT)
::The centaur sighs, truly a lost soul. He's quite far away now. He hangs his head and shakes it from side to side lightly, truly resigned to his fate that he cannot get himself out of here.::
