Title: Posting Issues

kaytee83 - May 6, 2004 09:54 AM (GMT)
If there's a recurring nuisance that users seem to be doing against the board guidelines and don't seem to be aware of it, we'll be using this thread to remind you. As with all announcements, make sure you read all new posts.

At the moment, people don't seem to be aware of the concept of events that happened in the past, remain in the past. This is cross-posted from the Library as it seems some of you may not have read it:

QUOTE
This isn't about hours or day and night, it's about the course of events, and your place within.

It is impossible to know of an event after it has happened, unless one is psychic, or has been informed of it. If you arrive at a location after an event has happened, then you logically and realistically should have no idea about it, correct? Correct.

Thus, there should be no posts saying ::So and so walks in and overhears/sees whatever happened about three hours ago world time.::

That sort of thing simply does not work when we're writing in the present tense. It's understandable that users wish to get in on the action if something particularly exciting is happening, but understand that if an event is over, it is over, and you cannot reverse time to compensate for you not being online when said event was happening.

However, you may use the past tense. This is allowed, but please don't go in excess. Usually, you should only use it when your character is already in a thread but hasn't posted for a long time, for example:

::Character had been listening intently to the other's conversation up until now, when she finally pipes up with an opinion of her own.::

Still, you may use it if you really feel you wish to have been witness to an event, for example:

::Character had arrived on the scene just as the hideous beast was about to attack it's victim, but had watched from the sidelines. Now she creeps from her hiding place, trembling, and hurriedly checks out the area for any signs of the monster's return.::

If something doesn't make sense in real life, chances are it won't here either!

I've seen many posts which go against this, people arriving on the scene and knowing that someone is a demon because they 'came out' a few posts earlier, but YOU arrive when your first post appears, and should have no previous knowledge. I'm even iffy about the past-tense posting. Avoid that if you can, but do not reply to someone's question if they've left the room. I've seen conversations where one party has LEFT the thread, and the other continues talking to them, THEN says bye, THEN watches them leave. They left yesterday! You see how doing this makes no sense?

Ah... I feel better now...

Comments welcome.

Bump. I will add this, and I will say this only once more before I start Warning people who do not know how to time their posts correctly.

If somebody has posted something, then it has happened. You cannot react to it as if they're still doing it while your character is posting. Take this example.

QUOTE
::Piper turns to Phoebe and yells.::

"What am I supposed to do? Huh?"

::She raises her fists as though she's about to punch her sister, then sighs in anger.::

"And now where the holy hell is Paige?!?"

::She growls loudly and storms off.::

Easy enough to respond to, huh? Well apparently not! Here is the wrong answer which a good many members would be happy to post;

QUOTE
::Phoebe wrings her hands in horror at Piper's sudden outburst.::

"Piper, honey, I don't know what we could've done, what you, there's nothing anybody could've done!"

::She leans back, eyes shut tightly as Piper looks like she's about to strike her.::

"I don't know where Paige is."

::She opens her eyes to see her walking away. She chases after her.::

"Piper, come onnnn!"

Acceptable? Hardly. One thing I have been so enforcing-y about is the TIMING RULE. Heard of it? Good! Since at the end of Piper's post, she had ALREADY walked away, Phoebe's entire post is a load of shit. Here is what would be a correct reponse:

QUOTE
::Phoebe jogs to catch up with Piper and catches her arm.::

"Come on, Piper, don't be like this - there's nothing you could do, okay? Nothing any of us could do."

::Her mind races, trying to think of ways she can soothe her sister.::

"Look, Paige is nearby, okay? I uh, she went out-- I don't know where..."

Okay. Take a look at the two. See how they differ? See which one makes more sense in the ACW format? Learn how to do this.

Comments welcome.

Well, this also would be more convinenant (or hwoever you spell it) if people are on at the same time right? That's make it easier for people to talk. I mean if peopel do leave the thread others can't really do jack about it. I mean I have done that in the past and might still be doing it now. But I'll watch for it as I post.

The thing is that if a player sees another player online, most people would be likely to want to start a conversation other then end it unless their character or something requires leaving the thread. Doesn't timezone plays a role into this? It's just more... easier that say for people that are online together to continue a chat. I've... seen some people that arn't patient enough to wait. After they posted and then for a few hours, they edited it, leaving the thread not to another destination, to elsewhere and then they disappear for an hour or two then come back in another location.

It's just that some peopeel are impatient to wait for other posters if they don't happen to be online at the same time. And if you're online, then you can react more, "quickly" to a person.

But it all comes down to action and how people should threat posts in 'realtime'. Time might not flow parallel in ACW as in our World, but the posts are certainly in real time. If an action is done. It is done and so on and so forth.

But as I said I'll look out for my own posts from now on.

If this doesn't make any sense. Please ignore thank you...

Shinji:

I understand about what you mean about the time zone thing. I live in California, and many of my posting partners live on the East Coast, which means their time is 3 hrs earlier then mine. Being in Assie land, you're at max 13 hours ahead of me. (I had a guy firend that used to call me at 9pm California time and it was 4pm the next day, his time.)

I've seen you online a few times. It's rare for me to go to bed before 4 am my time.

Btw, in game is it day or night out? and is there a way to let us know when it is day and night?

Petunius - March 24, 2005 09:09 AM (GMT)
Use P3 as a guide. If it's closed then that generally means it's day and if it's open, then it's night.

Mandi - March 24, 2005 05:00 PM (GMT)
I've never seen it closed . . . I guess the timezones are opposite for me and P3 or something.

The time this is definately something that has confused me and made me wonder. It could be today for my character, but it could already be tomorrow or the next day for someone else.

Andrea - March 24, 2005 05:12 PM (GMT)
Um... there's always a post at the front door of P3 indicating whether it's open or closed at the time, and generally all you have to do is look in the bar thread. If people are posting, it's open. If the latest post there (or one of the most recent) says "everybody leaves" then it's pretty obvious. P3 is closed now, you can see for yourself. I make it around 11am/12pm in the ACW universe right now. ACW doesn't operate within our timezones, it has its own. Where it may be 5pm for me, 12pm for you, and 3am for Shinji and whatnot, it's still the same time in ACW for everybody. Else it'd just be ridiculous. Understand?

Mandi - March 24, 2005 05:16 PM (GMT)
Okay, that makes sense. Thanks!

Then it looks like we're on the same timezone. It's 12:15 PM here right now.

Trix - March 24, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
...

It's 5:40 where Ands is.

Andrea - March 24, 2005 05:44 PM (GMT)
What part of the 5pm for me, 12pm for you part was unclear?

... this is spam, back on topic for myself and the unwashed masses! So posting, eh?

Bump. I can count at least three people who should have a glance at this thread. B)
