Title: Power Pairing
Paz - February 10, 2006 02:50 PM (GMT)
I often ponder how getting different powers would have changed a character.
Take Josie and Moony for example, I really don't think that it would have effected their characters to have had a different set of powers. Josie's a force of nature in herself and Moony never relied on her powers to get her where she is. Stumped.
There are other characters, such as Petunius and Patience that I think may have changed if their characters had been given a different set of powers. If Petey had a physical power as opposed to a passive one, it may have made him more of a physical character, leading him to be even more violent and dominant. Pat, on the other hand may have used her powers more, leading her into different situations and therefore to make differnet choices, changing her character as she went along.
So that's what this thread is about. How do you think characters would have changed with a variation in powers. Do you think there'd be a difference in your character? Would they have been written differently? What about other people.
Also, do you think that there are cases where people's powers suit their personalities? If not, then what would be more suitable and fit better with their characteristics and behaviour.
Discuss, bitches.
Aidan - February 10, 2006 02:56 PM (GMT)
Definitely, I think that if Aidan had an active power such as telekinesis, fireballs etc etc, he would probably be more violent or confident, or dead. The power he has now is making him tap into his magical side more, and be smarter with it.
I always wonder what Azura would be like with an active ability, her power really revolves around her abilities, they're really interconnected. I think if Andrea had something passive, she might well be dead now with what she's like :P.
Paz - February 10, 2006 03:02 PM (GMT)
Azura would be an interesting one to see with a different set of powers. I remember how much she didn't match with her powers at all when she first got them, because she was so closed, but she's eased into them niceley. I think a power like forcefields would have suited her more. Still passive, but more defencive and to stop people getting close.
Andrea? Eh, she's already died once so it wouldn't really make a huge difference, she'd still be a total idiot with a different load of powers. She could scramble people's brains. That's without powers, even.
Aidan - February 10, 2006 03:06 PM (GMT)
If Valerie didn't have that sound manipulation power, she'd stop muting things! :D She might be more demon fighty with something different. I think Pet is a really active witch anyway, regardless of his powers, I don't think the two influence each other a whole lot.
Dante - February 10, 2006 03:08 PM (GMT)
I think Andrea would have suited the power of Self-Destruction.
Paz - February 10, 2006 03:10 PM (GMT)
True as that is, I can't help but think it'd be more-so if he had a physical ability to attack people with. Though he's learned to get around that and reverb attacks back at people. I think everyone's learned to make their powers work for them, or their characters have changed slightly to accomadate their powers, which is why I wonder how people would be if they had been given a different power in the very beginning.
I mean, imaging Andrea with premonitions.
Aidan - February 10, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
She'd think she was the second coming with premonitions. :P
I'm not sure I can really comment on Aidan's for this thread, he still needs to grow into them. I think people like Tobey though, or anyone with glamouring, I think that would shape a character, might make them more passive, gentile, along the lines of Azura, but with more smiles. Or, in contrast, someone who is undercover in the underworld all the time, sneaky and manipulative.
Paz - February 10, 2006 03:21 PM (GMT)
You see, i'd be willing to gamble that a power such as glamouring might make a person more deceptive and obscure, such is that nature of the power. I mean, any form changing power is about being adaptable and being able to lie about who you are. It would make you more or a con-artist.
I think that evil powers can really alter the character, in the most cases. Passive abilities make a sneakier kind of evil, where as a more damaging power might make a more physical kind of evil, if you know what I mean. I mean, when Paz went all evil and had dark powers that's how I had his character. Dark and a little twisted. The fact he had physical abilites only added to him atticking people, which led to everyone hating him and alot more fights.
Oh evil!Paz. Fun.
Aidan - February 10, 2006 03:32 PM (GMT)
Hmm I think perhaps glamouring might make someone really shy and withdrawn, as they're never truely aware of their identity. I mean, sometimes, who wouldn't want to completely change the way they look and hide away etc?
Passive evil abilities would make people be smarter, passive abilities in general do that. I know, in rp's I've been in before, nobody liked passive abilities, they concidered them weaker ones making the character useless. Therefore, anyone who got them were usually shy, but a lot of rp's allow you to pick your abilities, and therefore most people pick something active in order to be strong and heroic, which would make their personalities more overt.
Julie - February 10, 2006 03:54 PM (GMT)
Julie's power is badass, but I thinkmshe would've developed quicker with an evil power. It took me forever to actually get Julie using her power, but mostly because of other reasons. Don't think I can imagine her with any other powers since they're part of what makes Julie so Julie... apart from being obsessed with Andrea and all of that.
As for Josie, I think she'd do great if she had a rainbow producing power. :P
Andrea - February 10, 2006 05:06 PM (GMT)
Azura and her struggle with her powers has been the rockin'est. She hated them at first, and now she uses them to pry into people's lives... nosy whore. But I did love at the start how she really, really hated them because they were the exact opposite of anything she could ever want. Poor Az.
Who else? Dante for his longing to one-up everyone so he steals their powers? Meh...
Moira - February 10, 2006 06:30 PM (GMT)
Well Trix was pretty much completely defined by her powers, and as for Moira, I think that the defensive nature of pulsing goes quite well with her character. I suppose she might have turned out differently if she'd had something else.
Ryo - February 10, 2006 07:47 PM (GMT)
Ryo likes his powers... It seems to fit the avatar.

Please can that happen for real? Pretty please?!
And as for Petunius, I don't think he'd go around attacking people per se, since he's all "save the innocent, blah blah blah". I'd say Luke would be naturally more inclined to be more violent if he had offensive powers. Just look at his recent antics.
Personally for me, Petunius as a psychic would have been the more interesting avenue.
Anex Coldstone - May 18, 2006 11:03 PM (GMT)
I think that being a Healer isn't really what I was thinking for Anex. I do enjoy the power a bunch, but it would be cool if she had a more active power like Astral Projection. Any ideas on what her power might grow into in the (hopefully) near future?
Tobey - May 20, 2006 08:28 AM (GMT)
The power to rock the world! Hehe, kidding. I think healing's neat but it would be cool if you could orb too. Wait, can you orb?
Petunius - May 20, 2006 09:56 AM (GMT)
She's a witch with the power to heal, not a whitelighter.
Tobey - May 21, 2006 12:02 PM (GMT)
Still cooler than glamouring though. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but it's just too...ya know. <_<
Healing's awesome.
Wesley - May 21, 2006 12:16 PM (GMT)
In my opinion, glamouring is an excellent power. That is, if you use it sensibly and more frequently.
Tobey - May 21, 2006 12:21 PM (GMT)
I guess I just don't exactly get the chance to use it. I mean, I practice but I don't think I ever glamoured to actually save someone's life or anything like that.
Wesley - May 21, 2006 12:30 PM (GMT)
That's just a lame excuse now. Tobey has plenty of opportunities to use his powers and I think it's a good match for him only because of Tobey's timidness.
Julie - May 21, 2006 12:50 PM (GMT)
Glamouring is an excellent power. One of the best really. Especially if you're evil. Then you're set!
Lily - May 21, 2006 12:51 PM (GMT)
Glamouring does rock, definately!
I laugh at Lily with her powers, a nervous time bomb who can make things spontaneously combust. Fantastic!
Josie - May 21, 2006 01:02 PM (GMT)
See? Another awesome power! Though I think Lily needs the power to make plants grow or something.
Lily - May 21, 2006 01:11 PM (GMT)
I agree, it is an awesome power! Heh. Lily and making plants grow, that would also be teh coolies!
Julie - May 21, 2006 01:23 PM (GMT)
Josie should be able to make bunnies appear!
Tobey - May 22, 2006 01:52 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I guess you're right.
*embraces power*
Okaay. Time to glamour up...

Healing = great. 'Cept can't use it on herself, and she can't really use it offensivly. Unless the person is undead? Don't know if that would work, but a small idea :D
Tobey - May 25, 2006 08:23 AM (GMT)
Dante - May 25, 2006 11:36 AM (GMT)
How was that on topic?!
Stop spamming, spammer!
Tobey - May 28, 2006 03:27 PM (GMT)
Okay. I like my power. Glamouring is fun...on topic, topic, topic...
Now tell me: how was what funny?
Moony - May 28, 2006 04:08 PM (GMT)
Now tell me, how is that on topic?
Tobey - May 29, 2006 01:49 PM (GMT)
Well, I mentioned the word "power" and "glamour". Hehe. Okay I suck at spamming! <_<
Sorry. But here's a question:
How do I know how long I get to glamour as someone or something. I mean, do the PTB tell me or do I decide that oh "Tobey is back to his old self". Hah, sooo on topic!
Carys - May 29, 2006 02:27 PM (GMT)
Since you've hardly practiced much and are pretty new, you can probably figure out for yourself that it won't be for very long; I'd say around two posts at the moment. If we think you're being unrealistic, though, you'll get a Powers post.
Tobey - May 31, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
Okay, thanks for letting me know. And just to be safe I think I'll stop posting on this thread for a while. Don't wanna go all off-topic-y. :)
Nadia - March 8, 2007 03:45 AM (GMT)
So what happened to this thread?
I think that Nadia's powers are paired pretty well. She knows what she wants (even if she is dumb about it), and the power itself will help her get what she wants. And, with the batch of new people coming around and their new powers, I say you will chat here. So...do it! :)
Hawke - March 8, 2007 05:25 AM (GMT)
Yes, m'am.
*salutes*
Hawke's power? Is the shitz. Although he's using the shimmering (just cause it's so damn convenient) a lot more than his gorgon stare, the power is quite well suited to the guy. I can't imagine him being anything other than an evil, evil gorgon. Not the flashiest power on the block - but it definitely has it's uses.
Layla - March 8, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
Aye aye cap'n.
I actually had a whole other idea for Layla when I first startet, but it just didn't seem to work out. I like the fact that she can control her emotions to some extend but not the constant flow if questions she seems to have.
On topic, though, I think the powers suit her very much. The thought of her finally letting her feelings go and then setting fire to something (making it even worse) amuses me.
But I'm a geek. So.
There. Discussed.
kaytee83 - March 8, 2007 12:33 PM (GMT)
So how much do you guys think the powers have changed your original conception of your character? I can't really remember what my ACW experiences were like, and I'm never sure if the powers ever have anything to do with my characters walking away from me and taking a life of their own <_< but it's possibly diffferent for different people. Azura, perhaps. Poor Azura got the power least suited to her in the beginning. I remember it fondly!
